The Eat Sleep Study shirts are for Finals Week Encouragement. Some of us will be stopping by your offices soon to take pictures of you all in your advising centers wishing students well on their finals.

Please find below the advisor #mannequinchallenge! Nicely done folks J

October meeting and workshop

Hey fellow CSUSB Advisors!

Don't forget:

·         Monthly Meeting – Thursday, October 13th
o   Not your traditional case study discussion – come to the meeting to find out what that means
o   We will have chips & dip to get you through the afternoon J

·         Resume Workshop – Friday, October 14th
o   We didn’t get a chance to discuss this at the last workshop, so we have a workshop just for this
o   This will also tie into how LinkedIn can be an important tool for you and how it relates to resumes
o   This can also help if you’re planning to submit a travel or scholarship grant for the NACADA Region 9 Conference

Check your e-mail for more info!

Take care,

Matt

New Advisors Group updates!

Hello fellow CSUSB Advisors,

Thank you to everyone who completed New Advisors Group survey.  We had a 92% completion rate!  What does that mean? We can do the opportunity drawing for the picture frame! Click the link below to find out the lucky winner, https://www.instagram.com/p/BKlhiXohOF7/?taken-by=csusb_advisors

A few updates based off the survey:

  • ·         Career Center workshop: There was overwhelmingly positive feedback from you all regarding the most recent workshop.

o   Your feedback has been shared with the Career Center. Sarai and Angie have responded back that your comments were valuable and will help with future workshops.
o   Speaking of future workshops, we will be reaching out the Career Center for a possible professional development workshop in either October of November. Since time was a factor in the last workshop, we will try to have one topic per workshop. Hopefully the next one we have will be regarding resumes.

  • ·         Advising Library: There was a comment about not knowing there was an advising library.  Yes, we do have a “mini” academic advising library. It is relatively new (since August).  The library is housed in Advising and Academic Services, UH-380.  There are various resources from advising and career texts, pocketbooks, DVDs, and teaching materials.  Stop on by and take a look.

  • ·       Patricia’s Monday Motivational images are posted on the CSUSB_Advisors Instagram account. If there are any posts, pictures, events, ideas, etc. you have, let me know.

  • ·         A doodle will be sent out by the end of the day for your availability next month for scheduling October’s meeting and maybe a professional development workshop.

Take care,

Matt

Branding Your Professional Self

Hi fellow CSUSB Advisors!

Thank you for attending the “Branding Your Professional Self” workshop, hosted by the Career Center.  Sarai, Angie and Crystal were planning to go over more, but time got the best of us.  We still hope the networking portion of the workshop was beneficial to you.

Please fill out the following survey that was e-mailed to you earlier today. *Survey will be open now thru Friday, Sept. 16th

Depending on the survey results, we will meet with the Career Center to have additional workshops to cover the topics they were not able to get to this morning. More than likely, there would be two additional workshops, one on Resumes & Personal Statements and one on LinkedIn/Social Media.

In this survey, you will be able to provide feedback regarding this morning’s workshop, as well as your overall thoughts about the New Advisors Group. You are able to skip the workshop questions if you were not able to attend.

Take care,

Matt

Professional Development Opportunity

Hi fellow CSUSB Advisors!

Yesterday, a few of us went on a campus tour at CSUSB. For some, this was a great way to be introduced to the campus as a new advisor as you can find out where specific campus resources are located and also find out some interesting facts along the way.

Thank you to Patricia from EOP for scheduling this!

In other news, Monday, September 12th is a professional development opportunity for the New Advisors Group. The Career Center staff will be presenting a workshop called, "Branding Your Professional Self".

This workshop is meant to help us with updating our resumes, the importance of LinkedIn, cleaning up our social media dirt and networking.  With many of us going to advising conferences this academic year, networking and having an updated resume can be valuable tools.

Thank you, Evelyn for the idea and helping set this up!

An e-mail has been sent to you all with the RSVP link.

Take care,

Matt

Opportunity Drawing!

Hey fellow CSUSB advisors!

Have you heard of "The New Advisor Guidebook: Mastering the Art of Academic Advising"?

I know some of you already have this book, but for those who don't, I'm going to do an opportunity drawing this Thursday for one lucky CSUSB advisor to win it.

Check your CSUSB e-mail. If you would like to be entered in the drawing, all you have to do is e-mail me back.

This book is 400 pages of foundational content that can help us as new or veteran advisors.

From the description:
The New Advisor Guidebook serves as an introduction to what advisors must know to do their jobs effectively. It pairs with Academic Advising Approaches: Strategies That Teach Students to Make the Most of College, also from NACADA, which presents the delivery strategies successful advisors can use to help students make the most of their college experience.

Thanks,

Matt
